Vaccines for the Future Act of 2007 (S.569)

S.569 - Introduced in the 110th Congress

The Vaccines for the Future Act of 2007 (S.569) was introduced in the Senate by Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) and in the House by Representative Peter Viscolsky (D-IN). The Bill encourages increased support for public private partnerships and public funding of research for development of vaccines and microbicides.

Although microbicides are not mentioned in the Act's title, they are an integral part of the legislation. S.569 directs the President to establish a strategy to accelerate efforts to develop vaccines and microbicides for neglected diseases such as HIV/AIDS. This strategy would seek to expand public-private partnerships, create economic incentives for vaccine research, development, and manufacturing, include the negotiation of advanced market commitments, enhance U.S. capacity to support clinical trials in developing countries, and address other impediments to development of vaccines and microbicides. The bills also directs the Secretary of the Treasury to enter into negotiations with the World Bank, the International Development Association, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations, and other entities to establish advanced market commitments to purchase such vaccines and microbicides.
