History of the Alliance

By serving as a catalyst for collaborative research and advocacy, and a clearinghouse for information, the Alliance has played an integral role in driving and nurturing the microbicide field’s organizational development, growth, and advancement. For the past decade, the Alliance has worked to build and maintain its unique position within and among microbicide and allied fields as an unbiased and trusted leader, partner, convener, provider, supporter, and problem-solver, and through these roles has leveraged greater resources and accomplished several major milestones.
  • Initiated legislative and policy advocacy efforts to increase federal funding for microbicides (1999)
  • Collaborated on first version of Microbicide Development Act (MDA) (2000)
  • First published News Digest (2000)
  • First published The Microbicide Quarterly (TMQ) (2003)
  • Collaborated with AVAC, IAVI, and UNAIDS to create HIV Vaccines and Microbicides Resource Tracking Working Group (2004)
  • Established Microbicide Donors Committee (MDC) and Quick Working Group (QWG) (2004)
  • Launched Microbicide Research and Development Database (MRDD) (2004)
  • Provided forum for launch of Microbicides Media and Communications Initiative (MMCI) (2005)
  • Initiated work and ultimately published The Microbicide Development Strategy (MDS) (2005–2006)
  • Initiated work and published Mapping the Microbicide Effort (2006–2007)
  • Published Microbicide Watch (2006)
  • Policy research and advocacy resulting in establishment of Microbicide Research Branch at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) (2007)
